Tim O'Donnell Supports Team Red, White & Blue

Tim Odonnell RunTeam RWB LogoTeam Red White and Blue's mission is to enrich the lives of wounded veterans and their families, specifically to support their reintegration back into society following their injuries.  In November 2010, ITU Long Course World Champion and 2010 Ironman 70.3 US Pro Champion Tim O'Donnell partnered with Team Red, White and Blue to raise money for the charity and awareness of it's mission.

FLMS:   Tim, where did you grow up & what sports did you play as a youth?

TO: I grew up all over the country, my dad was in the corporate automotive world and there were ALOT of transfers, FL MI, CA, NJ, OR, MA, PA to name some homes! I started swimming competitively when I was 5 years old on the Roseville Sugarbears in NORCAL. I swam all the way through my sophomore year at the Academy before focussing fully on triathlon.

FLMS: When did you do your first Triathlon? (explain the experience/gear)

TO: My first triathlon was the West Point Triathlon my senior year of high school in the fall of 1998. I had NO experience riding or running but luckily it was a sprint. My older brother Thomas was at the NavalAcademy at it was the official Army/Navy triathlon competition. I was going to watch and he persuaded me to race. I CRUSHED everyone out of the water in my old school speedo then got on my brother's schwinn from 1987 that way to small and attempted the bike/run. It wasn't pretty but I finished! I remember one of my brother's buddies flying by me on the bike and he said "don't worry timmy, will teach you how to ride." A few years later, I finally did learn!

FLMS: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment so far?

TO: Athletically winning the 2009 ITU LD World Champs has been my greatest accomplishments. Listening to our anthem being played overseas, and knowing you are the reason the flag is flying high is a great feeling!

FLMS: Tell us about your military background/experience.

TO: I graduated from the Naval Academy in 2003. After graduation I went into the Immediate Graduate Education Program (IJEP) and received my Master's in Ocean Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. I was in the Special Operations community and reported to EOD Group  One in San Diego after Berkeley. From there I went and completed my EOD diver training and when I returned to San Diego I was accepted into the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) and reported to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs where I trained for the 2008 Olympic Trials. While racing in the WCAP I went on to win six consecutive titles at the Armed Forces Triathlon Championships

Tim Odonnell SwimFLMS: Why is it important for you to give back to the community via Team Red, White & Blue?

TO: I knew I wanted to give back to a greater cause and make my career more than something just about me. I of course wanted to get involved in something that was close to my heart and something that would benefit from my position in the sport. When Mike, the founder of Team RWB contacted me I knew this was the right cause. RWB is set on building long term relationships and support systems for our Veterans through endurance sports. With background and very close ties to the military and with my position as a professional triathlete that gives me the ability to be heard in the sport I knew this was the perfect match. Without the support of the Navy and all the men and women in the service I would not have reached this level of success in triathlon, RWB is my opportunity to give back and to say thank you.

Team Red, White & Blue

Team Red, White & Blue’s (Team RWB) vision is to transform the way wounded veterans are reintegrated into society when they return from combat and exit their position in the Active Duty force or National Guard. Team RWB's intent is to create and support a unique community of veterans, their families and friends and endurance athletes to develop the sort of one-on-one, meaningful relationships that transcend short-term fundraising efforts. Team Red, White & Blue enriches the lives of wounded veterans and their families through a social leadership-based community. This community is made up of a diverse group of people – from athletes to advocates and concerned citizens – that do not view success in terms of dollars raised, but by relationships maintained. Team RWB works toward its mission by focusing on three key areas:

1. Endurance Events
2. Social Leadership-Based Network
3. One-on-One Relationships
