Catching Up with Mirinda Carfrae
Coming up through the ITU ranks, Mirinda Carfrae would show the triathlon world that she was fast. Â Not growing up as a swimmer, biker or a runner she was still able to grasp the sport of triathlon. Having success in 2001 Carfrae made the Junior Elite Team in her home country of Australia. After having good results at the ITU Olympic distances, in 2006 Mirinda took her racing into the 70.3 series, challenging her at longer distances.
In 2007 Miranda Carfrae won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, which is held in Clearwater, Florida. Â With that victory, the Ironman world would have to wait until 2009 to see what the Aussie could do on the Big Island of Hawaii. Competing in her first Ironman distance event the critics were waiting to see how she would perform. As most triathletes know, Kona is very unforgiving. The heat, winds and humidity are just some of the elements behind the mystique of the Ironman World Championship.
On October 10, 2009 Mirinda Carfrae showed up and put on a show for all Ironman fans to cherish. Coming in second place, behind Chrissie Wellington, in any ironman race is an accomplishment. To come in second place in your first attempt at Kona is simply remarkable. To add to her placement in the pro women’s division, Carfrae set a new Ironman World Championship marathon course record.
